Yet another ineractive map[marked]
« on: November 26, 2014, 08:31:22 PM »

Ok, I'm going to update this post with the current state of the map so it's easy to find for new users.

This is about an interactive map (google maps-style) that shows the map of the Story mode in Planet Explorers, with all story locations and ores and some other stuff.

The map is available here:
http://pemap.apphb.com/

Current state:
* Show the whole map with good-enough zoom levels
* Shows all story mode locations
* Shows all known ore locations (will never finish I guess, but has a few of each ore type right now)
* Search feature - type something in the text box in the top-right corner and the map shows all hits (like 'gold' or 'Wiles camp')
* Search linking - if you want to link to a feature on the map, you can link with a search term in the url, like this:
http://pemap.apphb.com#s=gold

Planned features:
* Add new items to map - this works locally, but doesn't store them anywhere so they are lost on the next reload
* Biomes - show where plants and creatures can be found somehow
* Any good ideas anyone else comes up with :)

[original post below:]
Hi all.

I saw traces of at least two interactive maps in these forums. Neither seem to work though. :(
Since I'd really like one, I threw something together. It still needs more "stuff", more game locations and ore locations and such.

If anyone still thinks it's a good idea I'd love to hear suggestions and other feedback!

It's right here:
http://pemap.apphb.com/

There are a few things I'm planning to add
* better background map - now it's a crappy jpeg from steam screenshot :P
* more locations - all standard locations in the game and all ore locations I can find in the forums
* Where to find specific animals. As regions somehow, haven't figured out how to group those together in a sane way

It should work pretty well on mobiles (although the draw tools doesn't).
You can select what layers to show in the menu in the top right. (ignore the plus sign - it does nothing right now)

So what do you think? Any ideas on how to improve this? Is it even worth the effort?
Do you have any tips on where to find lists of locations? (name + coordinates + description is enough for now)

I never saw the other interactive maps, perhaps this is crap compared to them. If so, perhaps you that saw those could give some tips based on what they did well?

I happily stole the ore locations from forum threads, I hope you don't mind.

Very cool!  Thanks for taking the time and trouble.  I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Really nice!

Why does the map always remind me of Skyrim?  ;D

Good start.

I think changing the icons for mineral deposits would be a good idea, instead of them all being the same. Or have the labels permanently visible. Right now you have to hover over each one individually to see what it is. Or lots of clicking in that little window on the side to un-tick everything except the one mineral I'm interested in. If I have a specific mineral in mind, it'd be nice to just look at the map and immediately see where it is.

By the way, I've been using this map, you may want to add these coordinates to yours. http://s215.photobucket.com/user/Maclynster/media/Metsurvey.png.html

Missing:

- The three animal nests
- earth camp site
- Crash site south of earth camp
- Desert city
- Waterfall marker (swim up the falls to get this one)
- Lake
- Northern crash site
- A few more natural locations of interest

Ok, I've added all story locations now (I think).

I've also added some colored ore icons now, but some locations has more than one ore... I'm not sure what to do there. I'm leaving them green for now, if anyone has an idea I'd love to hear it!

And now all mineral locations from the "Ore Locations (Collaboration)" thread and the image Pauly linked to has been added.

I like the new features.

Stll missing a few things:
  • the Rock Formation
  • the natural bridge just east of the Firebear nest
  • the large silver deposit under the west (Firebear side) of the natural bridge.

The Rock Formation is there, but it's hidden behind an ore location on the same spot. :P
I'm considering moving the ores that is like that a bit so you can see both.

Natural bridges are a good idea! I'm always searching  for those. Show them with a new icon? Or maybe a line (like you can draw with the draw tools)?

Do you have coordinates for the silver deposit?

The usual bridge symbol would work for me:

Nope, but one end of it is directly under the western (Firebear) end of the bridge and runs S from there along the river bank.

Ok, I've added land bridges (only have one so far :P), and added the silver deposit under the land bridge at 9890,7451.

The plus sign in the top right now shows a dialog where you can add stuff yourself. THIS IS JUST A TEST! It's not saved anywhere, the next time you load the map they will be gone! I'm thinking of saving them in a database somewhere, but I don't want to create a whole username/password thingy just for this, so I'm not sure how to stop griefing... I'll come up with something :)

First off just wanted to say thanks for a very nice map.

Secondly,
Coordinates | Bridge Orientation | Nearest Landmark

9957,7442 | E/W | East of Adisa Camp/Firebear Nest

8872,7781 | NE/SW | N/E of Andhera Cave
8535,8181 | E/W | South of Martian Camp
8241,8594 | NE/SW | West of Martian Camp
7891,9041 | NE/SW | Just down-stream from Lake Dayu

6891,9438 | N/S | Lake Dayu

7870,9482 | SE/NW and E/W over forest... | Just East of Lake Dayu
I tried to get the coordinates in-between both bridges.
2 natural bridges

4519,9169 N : 4375,7484 S | E/W | Island just north of Broken Dam
The first set of coordinates is from the norther-most bridge and the second set is from the southern-most
9 natural bridges

The coordinates are as close to the middle of the bridges as I could get them, except where indicated.
I didn't scan for minerals at any of the bridge locations, but I will try to get that done in the next few days.

I hope those help.

Great! Thanks! They've been added.

And kudos for using a well defined text format for writing the locations - I could easily convert them to json (the map internal format) with some regex :)
