What about adding in a quest line to allow you to have a loyal pet puppy or wolf pup. have it grow up and such. maybe teach small tricks, or send it to fetch resources.

In theory, could be a robot pet puppy, but i mean, maybe just give the dog a steampunk pair of goggles lol.

Could even tame a wild animal, with a bonus depending on which one.
Llama:  you can sheer it
Mr ladybug: could bring you worms or eggs
Panbat: brings you apples
Those umbrella things I can't recall the name: Shed spines
Birds: feathers and/or eggs
Slurpys: they shed maybe? Or gather for you

or, the dog/wolf could simply hunt them for you, and bring you whatever they drop (lower % drops than if you do it yourself) within a certain radius from your workshop.  If you could level them like the horse, then they could have stronger attack (higher level creatures), better chance of bringing back rare drops, wider range, and faster retrieval (more kills per day of hunting).

EDIT:  you could train them at your Kennel (building/upgrade) and could have 1 hunting dog per kennel level.  You can task each one to hunt something specific, as long as it is in range (pop-up for each dog, depending on their hunting skills).  Dogs will continue to hunt that creature for the rest of the day and bring back the spoils, or until you whistle for them to return and give them new orders.  Loyalty would determine whether they stay on track or get distracted and start hunting something else.  Down boy!  No!  Not the snail, the llama! the llama!  ROFL.

OMG i hope the devs read these suggestions hahaha,

i stilll like the idea of some sorta thing you can dig outta the mine to upgrade the puppy/wolf/companion

make them more efficient kinda thing. maybe things to upgrade in the kennel, like:
a beacon so the dog can go further out (range, increase)
scanner (help find the targets)
Food Dispenser (self explanatory)
advanced bedding (more energy in the day)

the list can go on i am sure hahaha

Oh I love that idea way better! Maybe different types of dogs? Some better for hunting, some for finding plant matter etc
