I say you just have one barrel. You adjust caliber and rifling twist. You can adjust the barrel from bore to crown in the manner you'd like. Thicker  at the bore and thinner at the crown? Go for it.

Accuracy would depend on stock design, balistics of chosen caliber ammo and grain of bullet, handling of the rifling twist, and maintenance of the weapon. Durability of weapon depends on quality of metals of the barrel and action vs. hardness of bullets being fired as well as the size of the bullet.

The action of the gun can be handled as the big linear design function. Choose the action and select a magazine. Want a top feeding bolt action shotgun as a pistol with a 3 round internal magazine? Why not. Harmonica guns are cool too.

So the player is supposed to just go about doing quests and other stuff without knowing what the potential skill point gain may be?  Should the quests also be modified to not tell the player what the potential quest rewards are for completing the quest?  How is the player supposed to decide which things they need to do to allow them to get where the want to go in the adventure game?

Well, when it comes to game design there are a plethora of theories on how to treat your players. Some of these theories establish rewards before even embarking on their mission. These tend to work better with games catered towards more players who will pick up the game and play for a short play session before setting the game down. Borderlands is actually a great example of this. Rewards are clearly defined, even for story critical missions.

Some of us feel as if such a clearly defined system is kind of like treating your player base like children. Establishing clearly defined rewards and such is something that only happens in Parent -> Child relations, not in most realistic situations. Therefor it can sometimes take away from the immersion.

But it's an interesting system. I believe there is a market trend towards clearly defined rewards or just entirely randomized rewards.

Just wanted to add in a quick edit. To any moderators, I realize that I DID necro a thread. But I hope that after review, you guys can dig it.

If you have an Nvidia card installed then you may be in a world of fun with Windows 10. though, at this point those issues may be resolved.

I'd do a few things. One, disable the installation of drivers by windows updater (Maybe later it'll work, but for now it will break the game). Then I'd install the latest drivers from Nvidia. Next I'd run the following command in an elevated command prompt "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"

This is just for good measure since when Windows 10 first released, Nvidia drivers from the Updater would break the OS. I have no idea why or how but I'd see 3 computers come in to the tech shop I work at, daily, with this same issue, when Win 10 dropped. It's stopped though so it may be resolved.

I remember a certain military empire that wore Silk under their armor.  This empire focused upon use of the Bow and Arrow.  Instead of wearing more armor under the armor, their silk proved MORE effective to helping their conquest.  This empire ended up having the single greatest land mass empire in world history.  These men were the Mongols lead of Genghis Khan.   

What does this have to do with anything?   They wore SILK under their armor and it improved their defenses against bows and arrows more than a chain shirt.  Also, many Medieval knights wore cloth under their armor.  So that the metal would dig into them.  THey even wore cloth under chain armor.

Silk was most effective based on the penetration capabilities of barbed arrows. The silk had a tendency to go into the wound with the arrow as to make it easier to remove the arrow from the wound. This didn't decrease the amount wounded. This just reduced the casualties. Leather would be able to deflect glancing arrows where silk wouldn't.

That's a level of wound physics that would probably not be fun to see in a game. Unless the game was just designed to be painfully difficult. Which I'd play it. But I think this wouldn't be fun - mainly cause I think that the soft-body physics required to make that work are part of that generation of processing technology at least 20yrs off. These involve carbon nano-tubes. Should be great. 

But I definitely would enjoy seeing some sort of Ceramic half-plate with kevlar joints. Would be interesting.
