Title: Heat Packs instead of Torches
Post by: Omidawn on March 16, 2018, 11:51:18 PM
I know this is an old topic, but it hasn't been addressed and I think it's important.

Most people who have played for any length of time will agree that it is as annoying as snot that your storage, replicator, and processor are taken over by the production of torches due to the food recipes that use torches.  Equipment storage is used up since torches still don't stack in storage (thankfully they do now stack, sort of, in the replicator) and they are considered equipment rather than resource, so it limits the equipment you can actually store.  Replicator queues are filled up because storage is full and there is no place to put the new torches (thankfully two slots have been reserved for player use only).  Processor requests for fat (for instance trying to make beacons) are immediately stolen before you can grab it, why? to make more torches, of course.

Players have asked repeatedly to replace all food recipes that use torches to use heat packs instead.  This is a small and easy thing to do.  Torches can still be used as equipment, if you want to place a torch, or swing a torch as a weapon.  Do not use equipment as part of a food recipe!!!  It bogs down every process.

Thanks in advance.

It might be better to just add a cooking UI to the campfire item that allows you to produce cooked food without requiring torches

There is already a heat pack in the game that is used for half of the food recipes.  It might be easiest to just USE IT for all of the recipes that currently ask for torches.  It's very simple... there is no need to add something new or have scripted cooking stations.  Just change the rest of the recipes to use heat packs.

Its more about the immersion. If I am cooking a meal at home I will use a stove not a consumable heat item whereas if I am out camping than I would use a consumable heating item oh no wait I wouldn't I would use a pocket stove or a camp fire. I think scripted campfires and potentially portable camp stoves make more sense than having the recipes require consumable heat sources.

Ah, ok.  I see what you are saying.  However, I'm thinking in terms of the current stage of development.  I don't think at this stage that there will be anything added to the game that is not already in the game.  It is an unrealistic expectation.  I do believe that they can and might make minor alterations to things that are already in the game... such as swapping one recipe ingredient for another, if it gains a significant improvement to the way the colonies operate.  Implementing entirely new concepts (camp stove) or reprogramming things that aren't broken (campfire)... I think that you are wasting your breath.  It is a good idea for immersion, and may be something usable for PE2, but it is too late for that to be included in PE. (My Opinion!)

I do suspect however that the devs would use these forums as a source of inspiration and feedback for the next PE

Absolutely.
