Title: Thoughts on the player-character.
Post by: MobRules on December 18, 2017, 01:19:15 PM
I've been thinking about the player-character, how they seem to have no specialized skills or abilities, a slaker ("didn't you pay attention in colonization class?" / "I thought you'd never ask, since you were never interested in learning back on the ship") and worst of all, is a total **** (demanding of Carter "what's in it for me, old man" before agreeing to a quick escort to save Gerdy's live immediately after crash-landing? Are you serious)?

And yet, somehow, this least-skilled, among-the-least-diplomatic people on the mission ends up taking the most significant leadership role of any of the colonists.

I've been thinking that it would make a lot more sense if the PC was a) not an ****, and b) A diplomacy specialist. This would make the PC the logical person for trying to reconcile (worse than originally feared) differences between the Earthlings and Martians, and the (totally unexpected) communication and negotiation with the natives. This would make the additional leadership roles the PC takes on beyond this (e.g. founding a colony) to make much more sense, as an extension of the job they were already doing.
